An introduction to Chiropractic treatment

Chiropractors study the spine and skeleton for 5 years full-time during their training. This gives us a lot of speciality to return your spine to health! Compare us to pain killers or treating the symptom area only and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at your comfort levels once recovered. Considering low back pain is the number one cause of sick days off work, keeping our backs and parts healthy keeps us at our daily jobs and keeps those rewards coming in. And best of all, chiropractic and osteopathy have been proven through international government authorised studies in more than three different countries to be the most effective and cost effective care for back pain (published in BMJ 1990 & 2004). We have also just been nominated by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE 2009) who advise GP’s that chiropractic should be referred to if low back pain continues for more than six weeks.

The primary point I would like to emphasise is, whatever degree of joint pain or simple morning stiffness you have, accumulating these permanent progressive strains in your body will need you to choose now or later how you are going to take care of yourself. Damage becomes harder to fix the longer you have it, which makes long term prevention ever more logical. As a Chiropractor I have a physical job and therefore enjoy simply having one treatment to my back and neck every 3 months (this is a treatment schedule my job dictates) to keep it moving. I like my spine to be as young as my mind! Manipulation alone doesn’t solve my pains and other holistic techniques like massage or SOT and CST (see below) seem to perform that final release needed. These extra techniques I believe help us look for a deeper cause of pain or adaptation in the body. It’s amazing what we can do prior to the need for drugs and surgery! This is why I like the idea of having all of these techniques under one roof as I often have to visit different clinics for different approaches I like to receive to make my care holistic. I sincerely hope you enjoyed this and that you plan to benefit from chiropractic care with us.

My story:

Hi I’m Mike Noone, clinic owner and lead Chiropractor at Newquay Chiropractic Clinic. I started my journey into Chiropractic in 1988/89 after being in the South African army and experiencing my first manipulation at a Chiropractor’s clinic in Cape Town. I was so surprised at the noise the manipulation made and the instant relief, the clinic jackets they wore and the private clinical setting felt so professional that I was instantly sold on the career. I grew up in a privileged part of Cape Town but in a poorer family with a lot of personal trauma. Along with the background of South Africa being tribal and traditional medicine of the indigenous people being common place, I felt a very strong pull towards helping others and doing it in a natural way. Chiropractic was the academic challenge I needed to prove myself, be an independent professional and grow a successful clinic business.

The only course back then was in the UK or mainland USA so I chose the UK being of Irish heritage. Unfortunately my background meant we had no money to pay for the course so after remortgaging the family home my mother found enough money to pay for the first term and we lied to the enrolment board about further funds. A part time job before leaving got the airline ticket and a squat in London meant I had a no cost roof overhead in June 1991. This was the start of me changing country and pursuing my career. I was convinced there was no hurdle big enough to stop me.

Since qualifying in 1995 and a final year in practice in Penzance advertised as ‘do you want to sail, walk the coast or do art while doing Chiropractic?’ Verse city adverts I was won over being a surfer and growing up on the coast. Cornwall was my destiny and my wife and children have made it our home.

My style of practice now is excellence in traditional Chiropractic manipulation mixed with cranio-sacral fascial release to get to the deeper layers. Sometimes these are emotional sometimes just other layers of tension from trauma. All in all I’m looking for the greatest repair I can make for you to show you your potential and what Chiropractic can do. I feel if I saw myself as a patient I would want the best achievable outcome in each session. I also refer to our masseurs if there is too much restriction in your spine to reduce the amount of manipulation required. Lastly we also pride ourselves on our Xray service so that we can look at arthritic change in the spine to better manage your case long term.

Love what you do and you never have to go to work I say

Scott Sutherland

I completed my 6 year Chiropractic masters degree in South Africa, travelled around SA doing locums for the experience and then travelled to the UK for the same reason. I enjoyed being in Cornwall and living in Newquay so much so that I settled here permanently currently raising my young family.

My personal interests have always revolved around the natural world and sports. I regularly take part in outdoor activities and various sports (surfing, tennis, cricket, rugby, hockey, and squash) at a reasonable level over the years.

Professionally my special interests are in functional medicine, neurology, and sports and therefore generally in many cases I take on a wellness approach to patient care if they so desire (emphasis on diet, activity levels, and mental health). We have a great comprehensive team at the clinic that allows for referrals and the ability to review and discuss any more complex cases. I have now been practicing for over 2 decades. I have learnt and honed many possible treatment styles to use and feel confident in my experience and in my ability to help most patients in most cases whilst hopefully exceeding their expectations of good care. Having said this I enjoy and value the need to continue striving to learn new things and keeping things new and fresh.

Amy Brockwell

Amy Brothwell

HI, I’m Amy Brothwell and I’ve been working as a Chiropractor in Nottingham since 2019. I have always loved coming to Cornwall, it was home away from home for myself and my husband. I am now lucky enough to call it my home.

Growing up, I competed nationally in swimming where I obtained various injuries. I turned to a chiropractor and after great results, I was able to continue competing. This led me to pursue a career in chiropractic where I then graduated from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth with an integrated masters of chiropractic.

Coming from an athletic background I found a special interest in treating sports related injuries, and completed my dissertation around shoulder injuries in swimming (great for all the surfers in Cornwall). Another special interest of mine was found during my clinical year at university where I had the opportunity to work at the feeding clinic, a voluntary service which helped new mothers achieve exclusive breastfeeding through the help of Chiropractics and midwifery. This is where I found my passion for paediatrics and pregnancy.

Over the past 4 years I have worked with a wide variety of patients of all ages. My style of Chiropractic treatment can be tailored specifically to the individual in front of me.

Becky Bazeley

With over 15 years of experience working with various therapies, Becky supports people in reconnecting with their natural capacity for balance, healing, and wellbeing. As a Five Element Acupuncturist and Spinal Flow Practitioner, her work focuses on addressing the root causes of imbalance instead of treating symptoms.

Five Element Acupuncture is a deeply holistic approach that recognises the connection between the body, mind and emotions. By working with the body’s natural energy systems, it helps restore harmony and resilience.

Spinal Flow is light touch and transformative therapy which guides the body to release stored stress and tension within the nervous system so the body can move out of survival patterns and back into a state of ease.

Becky’s approach is gentle, intuitive and tailored to each individual. Whether someone is seeking support with chronic pain, stress, fatigue, or emotional imbalance, her aim is always to create a space where the body can unwind, regulate, and heal naturally.
